As we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi, I recall the celebrated scene where Saint Francis (1181 – 1226) strips off his fine clothing in a refutation of the world and all it offers in exchange for a more simple life of growing in faith and service to our Lord, writes Mike Kutas, pictured above, Director of the Diocese of Lansing’s Saint Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt.
As Director of Saint Francis Retreat Center, I have been afforded an opportunity I would have never envisioned in my life: an opportunity to step away from what the world offers and accept a life changing gift. Now, when I introduce myself I say that I am blessed to be the Director of Saint Francis Retreat Center, because I have a front row seat to see how an all-powerful and loving God is actively at work in the lives of those who come and surrender to His call.
Of all the amazing people I get to meet in my role, the most inspiring witnesses to God’s hand actively guiding His Church is with the high school and college aged groups that find their way here. There is something profound happening with our younger generations. To see these steadfast young men and women ablaze with a deep love for the Lord, seeking traditional and humble ways of worshiping Him, and willing to make a stand for their faith, reflect these same traits modeled by Saint Francis some 900 years ago. Their example reminds me of how far I have yet to go in my own journey. For those who only hear negative comments about our younger generations, let me assure you, from my front row seat, we are in very good hands indeed.
I invite all to come to DeWitt to YOUR Retreat Center, step away from the world and all its stress, walk the ground or run our groomed trails. Stay for a day or perhaps join one of our weekend retreats. And, at least for a brief time, accept Jesus’ call to come away to a quiet place and pray. Saint Francis of Assisi, pray for us!
