1 Timothy 3:1-13
Psalms 101:1-3,5-6
Luke 7:11-17
1 Timothy 3:1-13
(1) This is a faithful saying: if a man seeks the office of an overseer, he desires a good work. (2) The overseer therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, modest, hospitable, good at teaching; (3) not a drinker, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; (4) one who rules his own house well, having children in subjection with all reverence; (5) (but if a man doesn’t know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the assembly of God?) (6) not a new convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. (7) Moreover he must have good testimony from those who are outside, to avoid falling into reproach and the snare of the devil. (8) Servants, in the same way, must be reverent, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for money; (9) holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. (10) Let them also first be tested; then let them serve if they are blameless. (11) Their wives in the same way must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. (12) Let servants be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. (13) For those who have served well gain for themselves a good standing, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Psalms 101:1-3,5-6
(1) I will sing of loving kindness and justice. To you, Yahweh, I will sing praises. (2) I will be careful to live a blameless life. When will you come to me? I will walk within my house with a blameless heart. (3) I will set no vile thing before my eyes. I hate the deeds of faithless men. They will not cling to me. (5) I will silence whoever secretly slanders his neighbor. I won’t tolerate one who is haughty and conceited. (6) My eyes will be on the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me. He who walks in a perfect way, he will serve me.
Luke 7:11-17
(11) Soon afterwards, he went to a city called Nain. Many of his disciples, along with a great multitude, went with him. (12) Now when he came near to the gate of the city, behold, one who was dead was carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. Many people of the city were with her. (13) When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said to her, “Don’t cry.” (14) He came near and touched the coffin, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I tell you, arise!” (15) He who was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. (16) Fear took hold of all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has visited his people!” (17) This report went out concerning him in the whole of Judea, and in all the surrounding region.
